The Red Envelope
A Tradition of the Chinese New Year
February 1, 2003

On the first day of the Chinese New Year it is customary for children to receive red envelopes filled with money. As the years go by, the children get more and more excited in anticipation of these annual gifts, much like kids get excited about Christmas gifts.

This was the first year we had the opportunity to celebrate the Chinese New Year with Linzhi. She was more excited by the actual envelope than what was inside.

Linzhi also received another red envelope from her "Aunt" Yuh-Juan. Yuh-Juan is a good friend who helps us understand the traditions surrounding Chinese holidays.
